Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Godard's children of Marx and Coca-Cola:

m glad to discover that Masculine Feminine is still sensational, and more prophetic than I'd realized. On paper the movie sounds tedious: taking off from the title, the entire movie is structured as a dialectic. On the masculine side: political milit... [Read More]

"The Pepsi Generation"? What the hell??

Filmbrain

In 1963 Pepsi began their now-famous "Come alive! You're in the Pepsi Generation" campaign. I guess it extended worldwide. . .

Check out Thomas Frank's The Conquest of Cool for the whole (fascinating) story.

Alex

And a Criterion release coming soon...

Greg Samsa

Yes but doesn't everyone know this film has always been about the "children of Marx and Coca Cola"? Huh.

Filmbrain

I'm not sure I understand what you are getting at. When Madeleine is being interviewed by a journalist, she's asked incredibly useless questions -- including "Are you a member of the Pepsi generation?"

Greg Samsa

It's just that I've heard the phrase "children of Marx and Coca Cola" used so so many times in conjunction with this film over the years in books and magazines, it's weird to hear it described as being about "The Pepsi Generation?" It's been a number of years since I've seen the film again, I didn't remember the Pepsi Generation question.

Maybe Coke wouldn't let them use the name? The end of the trailer hase TM's for "Pepsi" and "Pepsi Generation". Kind of weird is all.

I googled the phrase and apparently I'm not the only one who thought it weird:

"The trailer for Rialto's re-release of Godard's 1965 paeon to youth and pop Masculine Feminine is up, a snazzy little montage of clips from the movie set to a hip little number by one of the film's stars, Chantal Goya ("Tu m'as trop menti", to be exact). Curiously, the trailer's tagline is "Paris, Sex, and the Pepsi Generation", while Godard always claimed it was about "The Children of Marx and Coca-Cola". Surely, Marx may have fallen out of favor with the young, but Coca-Cola?"

Ah...I see.

The inter-title still exists in the film (about 3/4 of the way through) -- "The name of this film could have been The Children of Marx and Coca-Cola".

There are new subtitles for this reissue -- perhaps the Pepsi question wasn't translated as such in the original release?

Eddy Faust

I haven't seen the film yet...but I don't see why it can't cite BOTH Pepsi and Coca-Cola...it sort of makes a parallel between the Cold War and the Cola Wars.

Sean

Yeah, I remember the line about the "Pepsi Generation" (it's been years since I've seen it), but the "Marx and Coca-Cola" tag always seemed to stick to the picture. Maybe Coke's considered too stodgy and old-fashioned nowadays, and Pepsi sounds more "with-it". Maybe Pepsi is somehow affiliated with Rialto? It could be worse, though. They could have pasted in Frappochinos or Red Bulls or whatever the young cool kids are drinking now.

chris

Anybody catch specific references to 400 blows?

Natalie

this film is fantastic!
by any chance do you have the lyrics to "tu m'as trop menti" (chantal goya).
they seem to not exist!

Filmbrain

Here you go:

Je ne crois plus en tes promesses, tu m’as trop menti
Tu connaissais mon adresse, tu ne m’as pas écrit
Tu m’as fait trop de peine, quand tout au long des jours
J’attendais que revienne, l’écho d’un plus beau jour

Je ne crois plus en tes promesses, tu m’as trop menti
D’autres filles à ces promesses, ont déjà dit oui
T’amusant de mes larmes, versées pou cet amour
T’amusant de mon âme, tu me laisses à mes jours

Je ne crois plus en tes promesses, tu m’as trop menti
Je n’ai plus que la tristesse pour croire à la vie
Implorant l’existence, qu’un jour tu comprendras
Que pour ma délivrance, je pourrai croire en toi
Je pourrai croire en toi
