Filmbrain geeks out for a moment

Gojira

Friday before a long weekend. Am still working on reviews of Last Life in the Universe and three films by Lee Chang-dong. However, finding this today has reverted Filmbrain to his thirteen year-old self. Maybe it was watching all those Japanese monster movies on the Channel 7 4:30 Movie (who here is old enough to remember that?) but Filmbrain is as excited by this latest (and final?) Godzilla movie as he is by Wong Kar-wai's 2046.

From a Japan Today report, the new film (Godzilla: Final Wars) not only finds Godzilla battling ten other monsters, but has her¹ destroying Sydney, New York, Paris, Shanghai and much of Japan. Yikes! (Filmbrain wonders how she travels.) The official site has a list of the ten monsters in the film. Rodan is in there, as is Mothra, Hedorah (a.k.a. The Smog Monster) and the dreaded Monster X.

The film is being released in Japan this December. No news on a US release yet.

¹There's been a fifty-year debate on Godzilla's sex. Filmbrain has seen her lay eggs and act as mother to Godzuki, so that settles it in his mind. The argument is always open for discussion.
