You've Got Phone

Filmbrain has been a fan of Takashi Miike ever since he saw Audition. Whether it's the hyperkinetic energy of the Dead or Alive trilogy, the deeply disturbing themes of Visitor Q, or the simple beauty of The Bird People in China, Miike rarely disappoints.

At his current rate of churning out new product (at least three features per year), it's very hard to keep up. Filmbrain is hoping for the chance to see his 2003 thriller Chakushin Ari (One Missed Call). Described by some as The Ring on a cell phone, this looks like it could be quite a scary ride. Instead of a videotape, people start receiving messages on their cell phones from themselves, dated three days into the future. (The voicemail is of them letting out a blood-curdling scream.) Sure enough, three days later the receiver of the message dies a horrible death.

Miike's description of the film is priceless:

I don't want to sound boastful but this really is a scary film. I was frightened during the making of it, so it must be the real deal. But let's not forget, it's also a love story. Amid the fear, I hope you appreciate the beautiful love story at the heart of it and rediscover something special about yourself.
