That's the sound of Akira Kurosawa turning in his grave
Filmbrain's heart sank on Sunday morning when he read this article in the New York Times. The classic 1954 epic Seven Samurai has been turned into a video game -- Seven Samurai 20XX. Sigh. Why associate the game with a film that the average Playstation user will never see? Better yet, why not a tie-in with that travesty starring Tom Cruise? Even more depressing is news that Ryuichi Sakamoto is involved with the project. Sigh again.Perhaps this is just the beginning. Video game designers are at this moment grabbing classic films off video store shelves, searching for inspiration. How about Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal Action Chess 3D or Jean-Luc Godard's Weekend: Traffic Adventure? Filmbrain is holding out for the Ikiru game, as pictured here. | ![]() |

Love the Ikiru 20XX game!Maybe some Ozu titles can be translated into Playstation games? Tokyo Story: Vice City (which sounds like an odd manga or a pink eigu.
Seriously though, maybe one shouldn't be too worked up about The Seven Samurai. It's a classic action story that, of course, has been translated into a not-so-bad American Western, and I think it can translate into a pretty good game (I'm not a gamer by any definition, but I have played some). Besides, it was designed by a Japanese firm primarily for a Japanese audience, so there may be some name recognition there.
Nice looking blog, though. Found some cool stuff!
